A Minor Viral Sensation We Happen To Be Hosting
So last night I discovered a pretty silly thing after being shocked by a sudden influx of 2000 new users visiting DubiousRanger.com in the past 2 days. Did someone with a big readership post a glowing review? Did we suddenly just double our fanbase through a deal with some sort of devil or other TomWaitsesque character?
Turns out the answer is much more boring: earlier this week, my roommate attempted to call someone to book her for a public speaking event. Her answering machine away message was simultaneously hilarious, strangely hypnotic, and (unintentionally) musical in an avant-garde fashion. It's as if Steve Reich did a tape loop performance without a tape machine, but rather used a voice actor. We therefore did what any normal cruel jerks would do, and recorded the message to post on the web. I put it here in mp3 format.
And then bang people have been flooding our servers to download this delightful little verbal frolic. I blame Reddit.com, among other websites. Given its popularity, Dubious Ranger will be remixing this sample next week to create an actual song we'll be giving away. Expect something quite odd.
