10/16 San Francisco, CA: Pier 23

Ultimate Frisbee, once a treasured past-time for stoned hippies and the funemployed, has matured into a powerhouse sport of graceful agility, professional athleticism, and the occasional unusually dexterous stoned hippie. As the sport grows in popularity and playing level and the USA rides high from its summer win at Worlds, members of San Francisco's indie music scene have joined forces with local Club Ultimate to bring you one helluva party, the benefits of which will go in part towards The Bay Area Disc Association, a great local non-profit organization that mentors children about athletics and life through the sport of Ultimate.

It all goes down Friday night, October 16, at Pier 23 in San Francisco. With Treasure Island Fest scheduled for the next 2 days after, this party is your perfect pre-game for one of our city's best music festivals. Making appearances at this event will be:
- All of your best friends
- A load of delicious booze
- Some of the best Ultimate players in the world
- Oh heck, maybe also a contest at midnight to see who Beau Kittredge can jump over, and a variety of other frisbee-related contests and raffles throughout the evening

Serenading your evening will be some of the city's hottest new indie buzz bands, including:

Dubious Ranger (http://www.DubiousRanger.com) -
Recently picked by prestigious blog Deli SF as this month's best band of the bay area, Dubious Ranger marries the catchy art-rock stylings of Talking Heads and David Bowie with the calm innovation of Wilco, the frantic innovation of Radiohead, and the hip indie aesthetic of modern touchstones like Interpol, The Strokes, The National, and The Unicorns. They also play country music. Critically lauded both locally and nationally and coasting off the release of their new free-download EP "Butchers Volume 1" (available thru their website), Dubious Ranger is very discrete, but will haunt your dreams.

Blue Rabbit (http://www.myspace.com/bluerabbitmusic) -
Adored by critics and audiences alike and widely acknowledged as one of SF's best new bands, Blue Rabbit is an eight-piece multi-instrumental and vocal ensemble that fuses alternative indie pop with baroque elements, modern rhythms, and a hint of cabaret. Fronted by a close-harmony singing trio, grounded by intricate drum and cello grooves, and adorned with the syncopated pulsing of a Celtic harp, Blue Rabbit has been described as “The Andrews Sisters playing with Portishead,” or “Nick Cave songs with a touch of The Supremes.” Blue Rabbit’s lyrical imagery and haunting, minor-key melodies evoke a sense of magical melancholy akin to that of UK contemporary, Bat for Lashes. Plain and simple: you will instantly fall in love with this band, guaranteed.

The Steelwells (http://www.myspace.com/thesteelwells) -
Hailing from Orange County and standing against legions of trite Socal rockers are The Steelwells, a kickass quintet who fuse the heartfelt folksy anthems and driving rhythms of Death Cab For Cutie and REM with a ballsy rock delivery and beautifully sweet vocals. Crafting some of the best songs you'll hear floating under the radar this year, Steelwells are not to be missed.

DJ Heylo (http://www.laurenmnelson.com)-
One of the best and most sought-after DJ acts in the Bay Area, DJ HeyLo (aka Lauren Nelson) will be spinning the coolest mash-ups this side of Girl Talk in-between the band sets and as the night's closing act. Which, in basic terms, means throughout the evening. So get there early and stay until the end and prepare for booty-shaking of epic proportions. You may also contact DJ HeyLo for your party, event, inauguration, fiesta, or newly-invented holiday at laurenmnelson@gmail.com
